I got a few SSL certificates through GoDaddy a while back and don’t need them any more. I tried to figure out how to cancel them, but couldn’t figure out how to do it. So when the reminders came that they were about to rebill I replied and said I didn’t want them to rebill. They sent me instructions on what to do but it was IMPOSSIBLE to do what they said to do. I got back to them and told them I had hit a dead end and they never replied. That happened twice.
So they went and charged my card. I wrote and told them they didn’t have authorization to make the charge and they told me I had to do something else to get my money back. Again, it was IMPOSSIBLE to do what they were telling me to do. Only when I provided a screenshot showing that what there telling me to do couldn’t be done, did they tell me what I should have done months ago.
The entire time they’ve blamed me for not taking the necessary steps - never once have they really apologized. But beyond all of that they seem to think it’s all my fault and refuse to lift a finger to resolve the issue.
I don’t do business with people who are contemptuous and lazy, so I need another registrar. Which one should I switch to? Good prices on registration and private registration are essential. Being good to your customers is another one…
As soon as I’ve got things switched over I’ll do chargebacks on the GoDaddy charges.
I had a similar experience recently when trying to change the nameservers. It seemed physically impossible so I sent a support request asking them to do it for me for each of my domains. They point blank refused and sent me a barrel of useless instructions.
I know you’re angry now; wait until you try and transfer those domains to another registrar. You might actually do better calling their 800 number over trying to use their automated system. It’s designed to keep business in their arena; it’s so complicated that most people just give up and stay.
I tried to give Seth a domain I had that was expiring; the permission e-mail that I generated just never arrived, even after two days. We both gave up. When I sold Gay Porn Pig to Daniel, I just told him to sign up with GoDaddy and get an account. The transfer happened in five minutes.
Do I like it? No. I just don’t fight it any more. And like you, I just wouldn’t know where to go. There are a bunch of recommendations here on the board.
Enom is by far the best. More expensive but they are high up in the chain of things so any changes you do take immidate effect (they say within 24 hours but its always faster). Never had any problems with them and I moved all my domains over to them last year, never looked back.
Namecheap all the way (they are an Enom reseller).
I have had all my domains with them for over 4-5 years and never had any issues. Everything is blazingly fast and their control panel is a joy to work in. They are also dirt cheap and often have promotion coupons with which you can further decrease the normal price.
I have never had anything but really good experiences with them. However, I only do things via a single agent named Will and have built a good relationship with them. As with everything, it is how you approach the situation and who you know.
http://domainshack.com/ is an enom reseller too, if you get in touch with Eric and let him know your domain numbers, he will set you up on an enomcentral account and give you a good deal too.
I will vouch for Enom as that is my main Registrar. I think I got Bjorn setup through Eric who charges $10.95 a domain and that is directly through the Enom Central website.
If you want Rawtop I can hook you up with Eric. He can give you a test account at Enom and you can see if you like.
Like you, I FIND GODADDY IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK WITH! Everything turns into a time wasting experience. Including registering a domain name and all those fucking x - sells I have to decline.
Yep I had to create a godaddy account before for another domain I bought off someone. It just seems very very painful to transfer. I have the rest of mine at 123-reg.co.uk - I think the pretty colours and nice, simple interface did it for me.
I always call them, and so far it has worked. I agree email support is hopeless - all they do is copy paste some irrelevant stuff without making an effort to understand.
i bought a domain from someone that used namecheap. turns out there’s no way to transfer the domain away from them. i wrote and they sent me to a page that told how to transfer a domain from one namecheap user to another, but it seems that once you’re with namecheap, it’s forever…
That would violate ICANN policy; registrars HAVE to allow you to transfer away. If Namecheap won’t do it, call Enom directly and bitch. They will then contact Namecheap. If Namecheap won’t authorize the transfer, then Enom will take care of it.
We’ve used Enom for years and have a reseller account with them. Never had a problem with them. Superb customer service, reliable, easy to use interface. GoDaddy, on the other hand, I’ve had nothing but issues every time I’ve tried transferring domains away from them or doing anything else that would result in their getting less money.
actually i have found godaddy easy to transfer away from, its other registrars like register.com that make it near impossible, where you have to contact their support to get the auth code to complete the transfer, which then takes a week to get the support response and another week to get the automated transfer process completed. Godaddy just does this automatically so it all happens within a day.
I use Moniker for all my goofy side projects. Any changes I make to DNS or what have you take place within 10 minutes or less. It’s really quite astounding.
i should probably do that but it just seems like it’s going to be a huge hassle and i don’t have any major preferences in registrars. if i had more domains i’d go with enom, but i have less than 35 at all times, so i never bothered. maybe a change i should make this year.

I have had so many failed transfers at GoDaddy that it is no longer funny. One of the reasons is the email that they send out. What they ask you to do is not really possible. It’s hard to explain, but I would have to go back and look at one of the old emails. Maybe I can hit you up as I want to transfer my remaining domains out of Godaddy.
I’ve had the same experience. They make it nearly impossible (or have for me.) One domain i had to call 3 or 4 times and even then it still took almost a month to transfer it out.
