Attracting Readers

Hello:

I’m wondering if there is anyone out there able to advise me on the best way to attract readers to my blog? It is on blogspot and in it I share experiences, thoughts, and adventures on trying to get an amateur porn company started with little, if any, money.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Attracting Readers

got a couple questions:

are you trading links with other blogs?

how long has your blog been live?

how many posts do you have and are there pics?

Re: Attracting Readers

There are a number of webmaster related sites you can do trades with. How about putting up a link so we can see what you have going on in order to make more specific suggestions.

If you can’t post a link yet due to number of posts, just type it out like domain dot com.

Basschick: My current blog has been live since June of this year. It’s actually a continuation of one I started back in February of '08. Unfortunately, though, since I didn’t post anything over 30 days, while up in NYC helping my mom with some health issues, it was eliminated. I was really bummed because I had some good stuff on there. At least, that’s what the readers said.

I do have pictures, yes. Lately, however, I haven’t had much time to check other blogs out, but yes, I have been trading wherever possible.

Maybe I’m just being impatient?

Re: Attracting Readers

I’d say the first thing is to get yourself a domain, a host, and go that route, rather than through Blogspot. That warning page can kill ya. A host can be under $10 a month, install wordpress, and have a go at it. Domains are under $10 a year, so it isn’t a huge investment.

That would be my first suggestion on how to get traffic & sales. It is more professional, and you have much more control over things, such as whether you post once a day or once every two months. No lost material that way.

my 2 cents, and welcome to GayDemon

Re: Attracting Readers

I agree with Gaystoryman all the way plus you can actually get in and SEO it, which will be a large advantage for you.

Gaystoryman: Thanks for the suggestion! I actually have a domain and a host; an outfit called Hairy Glove. But I’m not happy with them. Everything I’ve done with them is almost as if I had to learn it myself. Their tech support isn’t the greatest. And although I like learning new things, HTML was certainly not part of my plan. It took up a LOT of my time.

The site is www.horndawgz.com.

Thanks for looking and for your advice!

At the risk of sounding like a total newbie, what is SEO?

Re: Attracting Readers

Search Engine Optimization, the only way you know is to ask

Try Host Gator that advertises here at Gay Demon, I don’t use them, but there are others here who do, and haven’t heard any complaints either. I have looked and their prices are pretty good.

You don’t need to know html to set up your own blog, like you have at blogspot. Just have Wordpress installed and it’ll be just like at Blogspot for you. Course you’ll have to worry about upgrade, and all that, but that’s party of being your own boss.

Got Questions, ask away, that is what this forum is for. Only dumb question is the one you don’t ask, so fire away if you got em.

Re: Attracting Readers

Blogspot/blogger doesn’t allow adult content. It’s right in the rules about content usage. If you own that horndawgz domain, why not install wordpress into a subdirectory on it? There’s enough of us here to talk you through doing that.

Re: Attracting Readers

if you want any readers that come back, you need to update - and pics or vids are always a draw. but first, i, too, recommend you move the site to its own hosting. and then trade with sites like gaydemon, bestmaleblogs and you’ll find other sites to trade with right here in this forum

Re: Attracting Readers

So what exactly is Wordpress?

Re: Attracting Readers

www.wordpress.org it’s a free blog software - opensource, and it’s what blogger and blogspot are using. You simply download it, unpack it, and create a subfolder on a site, or you can install it to the root if you don’t have other pages etc (you do on the horndawgz, that’s why i said use a sub directory) name it blog or dog farts or whatever tickles your fancy. Have your host create a mysql database name, user name and a password. You put those into the config-sample.php page, (open it with notepad) save and rename it to config.php and send it up with the rest of the files and folders via ftp.

Once it’s up you go to www dot yourdomainname.com/subfolder name if using one/wp-admin/install.php and follow the directions.

That’s it for the installation of the basic software.

Re: Attracting Readers

Blogger and blogspot do not use WordPress. Wordpress.com uses Wordpress as do many other site-specific blogs, but not Blogger/Blogspot - they’re competitors of WordPress.

I would add that if you’re going to move hosts, migrate to WordPress AFTER you migrate to a new host. If you put up WordPress first, it will really complicate the migration to another host.

Re: Attracting Readers

Wordpress is open source, free software, that creates the ‘blog’ for you and gives you the tools to manage it. It is similar to any other blog, but is the most widely known software, that you can use on your own domain, rather than on some company’s pre formatted server.

The first step is to decide if that is what you want to do.

Then you need to decide where you want to have this blog, on your own domain or not.

If you are unhappy with your current host, then find a new one that you are comfortable with, BEFORE you set up your BLOG.

Running your own blog, on your own domain means you should also know the basics of FTP, file transfer protocol, which is the manner in which you will put your files onto the domain at your host’s server.

You should also know how to use a compression program like Winzip to download files, and decompress them, to upload to your domain.

Once you have all that done, then you will need to make sure your host is configured, or able, to accept what you want to do. That is when you will need to get the software, and get it ready to upload and activate it. (This should be checked BEFORE YOU MOVE TO THE NEW HOST.)

Most here will be happy to walk you through that, but first you need to make your decisions. Do you want the site to be just your blog, which means you will install it into the main directory, or if you want it to be a subsection of the site, then you’ll install it into a sub directory, which is just a fancy name for a new folder on the server.

Re: Attracting Readers

Just one more thing, you mentioned how you have the domain and hosting in one package. I really hope you have the domain name under your control and not under your host’s control. Always best to separate hosting from domain buying, as hosting companies have been known to hold domain names hostage. My advice is to make sure the domain is in your account with a registrar (godaddy.com or any other) before you tell them you want to move.

Finding a host isn’t too difficult. Plenty of good adult hosts around at $10 a month and under.

There’s a learning curve to being a site owner/webmaster and I’m sure there are more questions in your mind than answers right now. One option for you is to maybe team up with a webmaster, or outsource the website production part to a trusted webmaster. Otherwise, you may need to take some time and do the research first.

Oh, and welcome to GayDemon! It’s a great place to network and learn!

Re: Attracting Readers

You guys have been a-fucking-MAY-zing! Thank you SO very much for your encouragement and willingness to share your knowledge. Because of you guys I have made the jump from the free Google Blogger to GoDaddy. I found it to be the least expensive of sites that offered to host my blog aside from the fact that I don’t need to learn Word Press! WOO-HOO! There’s already so much I need to learn I figured one more thing just might make my brain explode.

Check out the new blog, maybe subscribe if you find it of interest to you, and let me know what you think!

lol where to begin? Wordpress isn’t much of a learning curve to operate and publish. It is a simple point and click and as you get used to it, well, you learn to do more on it, thanks to all the extra’s you can add to it.

GoDaddy may be cheaper, but not what some would recommend, but hey, a buck saved can be a buck saved, at times.

When you want people to check out your site, you need to add the LINK to it. All you have to do is type the name. like this blog.horndawgproductions.com then you need to highlight it, and up top you’ll see a globe with what looks like glasses. Once you highlight the phrase or words you want to link, click that globe, then enter the URL which in this case is what you are highlighting. Click okay and then it is linked and people can easily go there to subscribe, or read, or whatever.
