Yahoo Groups Is Closing

I had pretty much forgotten about them, but …

Dear Yahoo Group Moderators and Members,

We launched Yahoo Groups 20 years ago to connect people around their shared interests. We helped our users navigate new towns, keep in touch with college friends, learn new skills, and most importantly, build connections they may have lost or never had in the first place. While we could not have been more proud of what we accomplished together, we are reaching out today with heavy hearts to let you know that we have decided to shut down Yahoo Groups on December 15, 2020.

Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period we’ve witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content. To that end, we must sometimes make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy as we hone our focus on other areas of the business.

Beginning December 15, 2020 the Yahoo Groups website will shut down and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo Groups. We’ve compiled a comprehensive FAQ here that includes alternative providers and information on how this will impact your group content.

Thank you for helping us build one of the earliest digital communities — we’re proud and honored to have forged countless connections over the last 20 years and played a small part in helping build your communities.

Sincerely,
The Yahoo Groups team

I actually thought they had closed years ago. They used be quite popular.

I also had no idea they were still around. They used to generate some pretty good traffic at one time, especially for niche sites.

Also quite prolific for pornshare groups. Will be happy to see them finally gone forver

I made a lot of money from Yahoo groups back in the day. They were relevant for a short hot moment though.

I wasn’t aware they were still around for the past decade or so lol… wow

I was surprised to discover they were still going a couple of years ago when we were seeking to reach out to local groups around the world to connect with one of our communities. We knew there were a lot of smaller clubs for that area of adult on Yahoo.

Use of groups had obviously declined by then. They used to be so active, with new members arriving every day, but now they’re pretty much just ghost towns. It’s a shame but I can’t say that I’m surprised they’re giving up on it.

I’ve always viewed Yahoo as being like AOL. Have they done anything new in the last ten years?

I miss when they were straight-up newsgroups, like alt.binaries.gillian.andersons.head.on.other.peoples.bodies

Hey Simon, haven’t seen you for a while! Welcome back :slightly_smiling_face:

I enjoyed the basic newsgroups too, there was something exciting about opening your emails and finding loads of new updates. These days I open my emails and spend an hour deleting spam.
