i need to rename groups of pics in folders so that each group has a unique name. right now, the pics are all named 01, 02, 03 or even 02, 06, 08. i’d like to rename pics in folder 1 jimpics1.jpg, jimpics2.jpg, jimpics3.jpg and so on, and pics in folder 2 bobpics1.jpg, bobpics2.jpg and so on.
I use a program called Batch File Renamer. It’s pretty basic but as far as renaming, it’s far more flexible and sophisticated than Thumbs Plus or Eyebatch, both of which I also use.
Hmmm. It appears that Cerebral Synergy, the people who wrote it, have a broken website. However, since the software is freeware and the license doesn’t seem to say anything about prohibiting redistribution, here it is…
It’s not free (you can try it for 30 days as shareware I think), but as it’s the ultimate file manager for Windows I’d say it’s well worth the price. It’s what the pro’s use anyway
I use total commander (http://www.ghisler.com). It can do renaming and a lot more.

I could never use the Windows Explorer.
I use total commander too. How do you get it to do a batch file rename like that though?
You then adjust at the Define Counter field where it should start counting from (e.g. Start at 1), and how many digits the number after the file will have (1, 2, 3 etc).
You can also adjust whether you want all files and extensions to be switched to upper or lowercase.
