Landrush open for .CM - any point?

I just noticed the landrush period has opened for .CM (Cameroon). Is it just yet another country domain or any value in getting one?

Might be to early in the morning for me, but .cm doesnt sound very exciting to me, neither does the price… $350 for 2 years!

$350 for 2 years? In this economy? Who the fuck are they kidding?!

With .st, .ws, and .cc among others all having tons of availability if one wants an obscure TLD no one can remember, this makes absolutely no sense to me.

I don’t even think .eu has caught on at all.

And with .info going for a buck a year (there was another big bust!) the market for a sensible TLD at a cheap price is already filled.

So I dunno wtf these guys are doing unless they’re totally stupid, or know something we don’t.

i guess that from a SEO perspective a nice domain like porn.cm could be usefull ? but beyound that i dont see any reason to go for a .cm compared to .info or .whatever just as Chip said…

Yeah, its ridiculous… and all of the good domains like porn.cm will end up being auctioned to the highest bidder I believe.

I’m not going to bother. I’m tired of buying 12 different versions of every damn thing. :slight_smile:

3 reasons I can think of using a funky domain TLD like that:

  • you are pushing exclusively to that country
  • you are protecting your brand
  • you invent some funky domain name like bit.ly or del.icio.us

country level domains are pretty much useless unless, as Luke points out, you’re marketing in the country. i know that as a consumer i would go xxxx.ca if i was looking for a canadian source. it can also be useful for registering your name… ie johnsmith.cm…

but at 350? ha… i’d have to be really patriotic to pay that.

besides if you look at the fine print on many of these country domains… they specifically disallow porn sites.

oh… and luke… if you want to register a site in libya( .ly)

Thats my feeling as well, i’ve bought so many now and its getting silly.

$350 for a country domain? In Cameroon? LOL. Yeah, would Cameroon even allow porn using their country domain suffix?

.ca is actually not that bad for SEO. I used to own a few. .com and .net seem to own the www though and I stick with those now. Interesting domains you folks came up with. Ha! ho.ly - you could read so much into that!
