I just saw a bunch of old Cybersocket magazines for sale on ebay and it reminded me that I used to enjoy picking these up at my local gay bars and bookstores. They often had useful webmaster articles and the ads often alerted me to new sites to promote.
It’s been a few years since I last saw the mag anywhere so that made me wonder if they still publish it or if they are now online only.
If they still publish the mag do any of you get free subscriptions since you work in the industry? I get a free sub to Xbiz and would love to get Cybersocket but I won’t bother asking for a comp subscription if no one else gets one.
Every few months I see an issue in West Hollywood. They used to be everywhere and I loved the magazine. Over the past few years they’ve become really hard to spot. For a while, when I would visit other cities, I’d ask gay establishments if they carried it. Most paces outside of West Hollywood had no idea what I was talking about.
It’s a shame. It was a great read back in the day.
Yep, they still publish it. They recently sent me a copy of one which had a story about porn in Australia. It must one of the few remaining mags of that kind still in print in the US.
I used to see it (and read it) around San Diego, but haven’t seen it for years. I’ve asked people I know from L.A., Seattle, Miami, D.C., to Boston and nobody has seen a print edition. I’ve asked the publishers where I can pick up a copy and haven’t been given an answer, saying that they’ll mail me a copy if I’d like one.
Well surprise, surprise, I happened to swing by a local gay bar last night and a saw stack of Cybersockets. Glad to pick one up because once again I found a few new sites I had not heard of yet (anyone familiar with ColbyKnox.com?).
It’s interesting that the mag hasn’t really changed at all since the last time I saw one a couple years ago, although it did seem a little thinner.
Oh, and their own ad says they print 70,000 copies each issue! Where the heck are all those going?
It’s definitely still in print, and they still sponsor most of the gay parties at Webmaster conventions as well as do their yearly awards show. It’s not very easy to find unless you live in L.A. though. I used to have a comp subscription when I advertised but don’t get them anymore. I do think it’s great they are still around after all these years and happy to continue supporting Morgan and his crew when I can!
