I have a mainsteam blog about finances. I just started it and no one’s heard of us, so i want to spread the word.
I want to run a contest where people refer their friends and I can give a prize to people who sign up for our mailing list and who refer their friend to the site.
IM thinking of giving $100 to the winner, and $100 to the friend who referred them.
Is there a contest software for this? Or do you have any succestions on how to handle this logistically? Like how to organize it?

I’m not sure how to do this within Wordpress. I know that with the forums there’s a way to give each member a “refer” link that’s coded with their member ID and it will track signups that way, plus there’s a place on the signup forms that ask who referred you. Unfortunately, the Register feature on a blog isn’t that complex, and I don’t know if it could be adjusted to include other fields.

I think there are some ‘extended login / registration’ plugins that add features to a log in such as who referred, etc. You’d have to search the Plug In Codex to find them, usually under ‘admin’. You can check here for 2.6 compatible one’s.
