Analytics and Industry Benchmarking

Updating and implementing new data analysis strategies I stumbled onto a topic that I wanted to post about over a year ago: Industry Category.

When adding views in GA their is a drop down form where you can select your pages related industry so that you can compare your pages to mainstream trends and changes.

Not to anyones surprise. Google did not feel it necessary to include “Adult Paysites” as an option.

The industry categories being:
UNSPECIFIED
ARTS_AND_ENTERTAINMENT
AUTOMOTIVE
BEAUTY_AND_FITNESS
BOOKS_AND_LITERATURE
BUSINESS_AND_INDUSTRIAL_MARKETS
TECHNOLOGY
FINANCE
FOOD_AND_DRINK
GAMES

JOBS_AND_EDUCATION
LAW_AND_GOVERNMENT

Any opinions?

Re: Analytics and Industry Benchmarking

We’re in the entertainment business. Unless you’re doing something like a hookup site which would be “online communities”.

Re: Analytics and Industry Benchmarking

I agree - use the Entertainment category.

Re: Analytics and Industry Benchmarking

I use Arts & Entertainment for the membership sites, Online Communities for Blogs & Forum and Shopping for the retail stores.

They break it according to the type of website, not the content. A shop is a shop no matter if it sells underwear, books or porn DVDs and a membership site belongs to Entertainment no matter if it’s Netflix, Apple Music or Staxus.

Thats a good point Andrei
