Newsweek wants to interview me about bug chasers. Should I do it?

Re: Newsweek wants to interview me about bug chasers. Should I do it?
I did a little research on the journalist. Looks like he’s young, and most of the articles he’s written for Newsweek are a bit on the fluffy side. One was literally asking “Are some people mosquito magnets?” I think he’s the same person who was an editor at a fairly big college paper up until recently - so he’s a recent college grad. Oh, if he is that person, he’s gay…

That puts a whole other light on it. I sorta wonder what his motivation is for airing the gay community’s dirty laundry in public… I think I know the answer to that and don’t really like it…

But even so, it could still be a dangerous situation… Especially when the editors get ahold of the article and rewrite it to make something out of it that will sell magazines…
If he’s the new gay kid at Newsweek,
He may just be using you and this story to prove himself to his new editor.

Re: Newsweek wants to interview me about bug chasers. Should I do it?

While not on such controversial topics, my own personal experiences with the media were less than stellar. They are looking for catchy headlines that sell, and almost always mess up some of the details.

ugh. the entire topic gives me the creeps. I’d say no comment is the best comment on the subject.

Re: Newsweek wants to interview me about bug chasers. Should I do it?

I’ve basically turned him down, though left the door open for him to convince me it won’t turn into a horrible experience for me.

Looks like he is the young gay guy I thought he was, and he mentioned that even he has misgivings about the topic. I brought up the the idea that this wasn’t a good topic for our community in an election year - hopefully he’ll drop the idea at least for now and find another way to make a mark at his new job…

And I found out he contacted one of the bloggers I know who’s a bug chaser. That guy knew instantly that it could go badly for him if he got interviewed by the national press. So I don’t know how much cooperation he’s going to get on the story…

Re: Newsweek wants to interview me about bug chasers. Should I do it?

My personal experience with the national media was great and they didn’t demonize me at all. They could have easily taken the “He’s a Gay single father pornographer ~ he’s evil” approach, they didn’t. Thankfully they were on my side and put pressure where it was needed for justice to prevail. First short article I could find

That being said, there is no controlling the media. You put your future, and reputation, in their hands.
