How many videos do you allow users to download?

I’m curious what limits you set with your members on downloading videos.

It varies a lot, we normally cover that in reviews but only if there are restrictions.

SayUncle’s limit is currently set at roughly 30 movies in a 2 hour period.

we have a download limit of 20gb/day

We turned off downloads about 13 months ago and saw no change in behavior. We offer users to buy the videos separately for a cost per video. Most people don’t care about downloads anymore…just the old timers. My 2 cents.

I change the Bentley Race video limit last year to 20 high res videos and 50 of any other res videos in a 24 hours period. It helped deal with a problem with some users downloading a tonne of videos in a short period of time and causing issues for other users of the site. Once the site has a lot of large videos on it, there needs to be some fair use rules.

Did it make any difference to the hosting bill?

I don’t think think it made much difference to the hosting bill. I was more concerned about making sure the service is stable for all users. It was alarming to wake up on a Sunday morning to find the site has been “unreachable” for an unknown number of hours.
