yesterday one of the bigger ebook sellers let their patrons know that one of the companies that provides some of the publishers’ DRM would stop serving files to that ebook sellers’ customers as of the end of this month. that means that those of us who paid for those ebooks will no longer be able to read them - even though in some cases we paid as much as a paperback or in some cases a sale hardback.
the DRM company has not told the seller why they are dropping them - they’ve never dropped any other seller. the seller is probably the most professional among the ones i’ve used, and are nice folks, although who knows what’s behind it.
but the bottom line is that the customer is who will suffer for it - the customer and the ebook industry, which is already taking a while to catch on, in part because of so many proprietary ebook formats.
